Tucked away on Galleywood Common overlooking the old racecourse. Two bars, real fires, well-kept ales and honest home-cooked food. Walkers and dogs always welcome.
The pub
The Horse & Groom sits quietly on The Common at Galleywood, looking out over the old racecourse. It is a traditional two-bar pub with a real fire, walls hung with old photographs of Chelmsford and a 1908 map of Essex, and the unhurried feel of somewhere that has been the heart of the village for a very long time.
One bar is kept quiet for a proper pint and a chat. The other has the sport on. Either way you will find a warm welcome, a well-kept ale and a plate of good home cooking, whether you have wandered in off the common or come the long way round for Sunday lunch.

At the bar
There is always a familiar cask waiting, alongside guest ales that change through the season for the regulars who like to try something new.

In the kitchen
Proper pub cooking served in both bars — the sort of plate you come back for. Lunch and evening meals through the week, with a full roast on Sundays.

Outside
A garden for the warmer days, plenty of parking, and a spot on the common that makes us the natural stop at the end of a walk. Dogs are welcome outside of mealtimes, and there is a function room for get-togethers.
